Scope and Contents

The Sister Madeleine Sophie Weber Papers chronicle life at St. Edward's University and the development of the all women's school, Maryhill College. This collection includes newspaper clippings, correspondence, press releases, and event programs related to Maryhill College and the Sisters of Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Photographs included also document campus life and student and faculty extracirricular activities. The collection spans the years 1964 to 1980.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Madeleine Sophie Weber came to St. Edward's University in 1969 as an instructor in The Center of Teaching and Learning. As a Sister of the Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, she had previously worked in Catholic elementary schools as a guidance counselor. At the beginning of her contract at St. Edward's, she was in the final year of her Ph.D. studies in Psychology from Loyola University Chicago, earning it in the Spring of 1970. During her time at the Hilltop, Sister Madeleine Sophie created the Psychology and Gerontology programs, later being promoted to Associate Professor of Psychology and Education. In three years, she developed 4 new courses for the programs while being involved in 8 committees on campus. She was also a member of 7 professional organizations at the state and national level. In 1975, Sister Madeleine Sophie Weber was nominated and selected as an Outstanding Educator of America.

Sister Madeleine Sophie Weber is also deeply concerned with acts of service and volunteerism. This is evidenced by her development of volunteer programs within St. Edward's and also the Austin community as a whole. On campus, she developed the Behavioral and Social Sciences Community Services Volunteer Program for students to students to engage with locals through volunteerism. She also worked to bring The Elderhostel Program to Austin, and created the Caregivers Program in South Austin. In 1988, she received the Jefferson Award from the American Institute of Public Service for her tireless efforts in the Austin Community. Sister Madeleine Sophie Weber continued to teach at St. Edward's until retiring in 1998. As of 2014, she was still active in the Austin community, working with the Austin Diocese and continuing her work with the Caregivers Program.
