Biographical / Historical

The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission issued the first permit for a Texas whiskey distillery in December 2007 to Garrison Brothers. However, it would not be until May 2013, when the Texas Legislature passed laws that allowed distilleries to open tasting rooms, sell bottles directly to customers, and serve cocktails, that the industry saw rapid growth. The culture of each distillery is represented in the promotional materials they create - some to promote a specific spirit or event, others to promote the business as a whole. As businesses grow, these materials often evolve to reflect changing times. Generally not meant to be kept in the long-term, these pieces of ephemera offer a snapshot of Texas distilling history.

Abstract

A collection of ephemera from distilleries from across the state of Texas. The bulk of the materials are stickers, coasters, taster glasses, clothing, signage, and business cards.

Arrangement

Collection is arranged in a single series, in order of acquisition.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Materials in this collection come from a variety of sources. The primary source of acquisition is direct donation by the associated distillery. Additional materials have been collected at public events, festivals, and from individual collectors.

Appraisal

Standard policy is to retain one copy of each item present at the time of donation. Additional materials are discarded in accordance with individual donor agreements.

Accruals

Regular accruals are expected.

Separated Materials

Because of the varying size and storage requirements of this highly varied collection, the materials for most distilleries are spread across multiple containers. Each folder lists the locations of separated items. Some materials have been chosen for display in the Tocker Reading Room. Others are hanging in the Archives Workroom to maximize storage space.
