Biographical / Historical
Dr.Patricia Hayes was president of St.Edward's University from 1984-1998. Hayes is recognized in Austin and around Texas for being an influential and visionary leader. Concern for the common good and a strong values orientation are hallmarks of both Dr.Hayes' personal philosophy and the mission of the institution she led.
Born January 14, 1944 in Binghamton, New York, Hayes earned a BA in English from the College of Saint Rose in 1968 and a PhD in Philosophy from Georgetown University in 1974. Hayes attended the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University in 1980. Before assuming her position at St.Edward's University, Hayes was Vice President of Administration and Finance and Treasurer at The College of Saint Rose in New York.
Hayes made a name for herself by guiding St.Edward's University to unprecedented success, including increasing endowment by 60 percent, increasing enrollment by 20 percent, and adding an array of physical enhancements to the campus totalling more than $13 million. Hayes was the first woman and the second layperson to lead St.Edward's, a historically male school until 1966. She became the second woman to lead the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce in 1988 after being in Austin only 3 years. The Chamber named Hayes their Austinite of the Year in 1990 based on her many contributions to the community.
Hayes' memberships included being on the Board of Directors for the following groups: Seton Healthcare Network, KLRU Austin, United Way Capital Area, RGK Foundation, Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU), and Austin Area Research Organization (AARO). Additionally, Hayes was part of the A+ Coalition Task Force and the Citizens Education Project in Austin, Texas. Nationally, she was a commissioner for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and was an appointee to the President's Commission on Migrant Education.
After resigning from Presidency at St.Edward's, Hayes went on to be Vice President and COO at Seton Healthcare Network. Hayes retired from official roles in 2014 and proceeded to volunteer in the community.
