Biographical / Historical

Amid great competition, in 1990 the City of Austin succeeded in becoming the first Texas home of the Dallas Cowboys' Summer Training Camp. The Cowboys hoped to energize the central Texas fanbase by training in Austin and St. Edward's saw the partnership as a win/win in terms of publicity and increased revenue. A number of events were held in conjunction with the team in order to market the university. Thousands of spectators flocked to campus every year. The team trained on a field built for their use in the area that now houses the St. Andre Apartments and Dujarie Hall. During these years a number of players were the subject of controversy, earning the Cowboys the dubious title of "The Most Wanted Team in America". In an attempt to dissuade players from going out during their off hours, cameras were installed in the dorm where they were staying. Players rebelled against this, pulling the cameras from the wall and causing considerable other damages to the building. The partnership was dissolved in 1997, with team owner Jerry Jones stating "We've mutually agreed that we've run out of room". The Cowboys won three Super Bowls during the years the team trained at St. Edward's University.
